International Aid Workers flee from Zomnaygrad

Joseph Swanson
ANC Press Writer

Zomnaygrad (ANC) – The roads leading from Zomnaygrad are choked with trucks, fleeing the capital city. Initial reports are sketchy as some say they were forced to leave while others say they left of their own volition. What is clear is that the city is being reoccupied by militia fighters of the EzelHoeden Resistance. Earlier this year the EHR left the city after the failed assault by Ardestad Government forces left the town in ruins and the EHR battered.

Heavily armed EHR soldiers can be seen walking throughout the city. This reporter has seen no evidence of forced removal or any other illegal activity by the militia fighters.

Many residents express concern for the future. This city has seen much rebuilding since the battle ended earlier this year. It now appears that what has been rebuilt may shortly be piles of rubble again.

Reconstruction Underway in Zomnaygrad

Jillian Alethia
ANC Press Writer

Zomnaygrad (ANC) In contrast to the calm of the past few months, new activity has been seen in and around the city of Zomnaygrad. It is not the sound of war, but the sound of construction. Reconstruction to be exact. After the heavy bombing of the town and the massive battle waged here in May, much of the town was in ruin. Construction crews headed by the UN peacekeepers and the Red Cross have been rebuilding the town for the last couple of weeks and have made a lot of head-way. Almost a dozen new buildings have been built in addition to the rebuilding of many buildings that were either destroyed during the battles or during the harsh weather that plagued the area during the summer. Although there are many new buildings, as of press time, they are not completed yet. Sources for the Red Cross say that they are running short of funds and man power, and until those situations are rectified, construction may not be complete until early spring. Members of the UN also voiced their extreme displeasure over the lack of local help. Papi Yermomovich, Commanding officer of the UN forces in the area, said "it is very frustrating to know we are getting very little if any help from the local people of the region on this construction effort. You would think that there would be many people willing to help since we are making Zomnaygrad a better place to live, work, and play. We are, after all, doing this for them. This is not for us... this is their place. Yet, they do very little to help out. It is almost to a point where we want to just walk away from the whole thing and let the place go to hell. Unfortunately, at this time, we don’t have that option. They complain all the time about wanting better things here... about wanting this and that, yet they do nothing to lift a finger to help make their own wishes and dreams become a reality. It is very frustrating." Similar sentiments were relayed throughout the UN forces and the Red Cross. The work, however, is slowly getting done.

Spokesmen from the Red Cross say feel their work may be for naught, however. Elements of both the EHR and the AGF have been spotted in the outskirts of the town. The feeling is both sides are ramping up for another shot at liberating the town. If that happens, the new construction could be doomed to the fate of the buildings they are replacing. At this time, it seems that both sides are content to ride out the storms on the outside of the town. Elements of the EHR command center were once secretly stationed inside the town, but were mostly wiped out in a vicious artillery attack carried out by AGF forces late last month. Word around town is the EHR will soon try to occupy the town, but that is speculation. Efforts to contact the EHR were unsuccessful.

For now, the work progresses slowly. The town is shaping up quite nicely, and there is a semblance of normality that has been added back to the town. But one can only wonder how long this normality will last, as the two beasts await in the outskirts of the town to once again renew their rivalry.

Mikhailovich Makes Television Appearance

Mikhailovich Makes Television AppearanceZomnaygrad (EUP) The most wanted man in Ardestad made an appearance on television yesterday. It is the first anyone has seen of him since an attack left the future of the Ezelhoeden Resistance (EHR) in doubt over a week ago.

Misha Mikhailovich, the self styled Political Information Officer of the EHR was seen on EHR News Network (ENN) condemning the attack in Ardestad’s capital city, Zomnaygrad that left a number of high-level EHR officials either dead or seriously wounded. Mikhailovich is the first of any of the officials who were present in the attack to be seen thus far. He was shown wearing a military uniform and partially bandaged. During the broadcast interview, Mikhailovich explained what happened to an off-screen interviewer during the attack.

“We were attending a meeting to discuss possible UN peace negotiations when the whole building we were in came under heavy and sustained rocket and mortar attack. Soon everyone was entombed in rubble. Thankfully a number of our loyal EHR soldiers nearby managed to pull a few of us to safety. I was injured severely, but it is nothing compared to what others have suffered. It will be insignificant to the level of destruction we will unleash upon the AGF in retribution for the murder of my comrades!”

Mikhailovich went on to say, “As of now, I have been granted command of EHR military operations and am currently formulating a strategy that will bring about the swift end of the AGF and its terrorist regime.

The interview continues for another 15 minutes in which Mikhailovich addresses various items of contest, such as the current UN stabilized battle lines between the Ardestad Governmental Forces (AGF) and the EHR, continued allegations of genocide and the return of political prisoners taken by the AGF as a result of what the AGF calls “increased security measures”.

One thing is certain though, Mikhailovich is still alive and he is planning retribution. UN Peacekeeping forces will certainly have their work cut out for them in the near future.

Zomnaygrad (EUP) Reports are sketchy at this time, however it has been confirmed that recently a number of attempts to uproot the core leadership of the Ezelhoeden Resistance (EHR) through a series of attacks by Ardestad Governmental Forces (AGF) in and around Zomnaygrad, located in the Ardestad Republic.

Since earlier this summer, a tenuous cease-fire has been in place between the two forces at the behest of United Nations Peacekeeping Forces (UNAPEF). What seems though is a recent attempt by the AGF to force the EHR into chaos by targeting key leaders within its organization. Three weeks ago, the EHR's central command post came under heavy mortar and rocket attack killing and wounding a large number of leading officials within the resistance.

Misha Mikhailovich, the Ezelhoeden Resistance Political Information Officer was one of the few leaders who managed to escape with his life from the attack and has been recuperating in an undisclosed location near Zomnaygrad. It is rumored that he has assumed control of the Ezelhoeden forces and is giving orders for preparation and mobilization of EHR forces as he heals. So far, attempts to reach Mikhailovich for comment have not been successful and only guesses at his intentions can be made at this point. One thing is certain though, with this latest outbreak of violence, the small Republic of Ardestad is likely to face even more turmoil before a long lasting peace is resolved.

The calm before the storm?

Jillian Alethia
ANC Press Writer

Zomnaygrad (ANC) An eerie calm has fallen over Zomnaygrad after the intense battle that raged here just a few months ago. Citizens have started to come back to their broken and battered houses to begin to pick up what is left of their shattered homes and lives. But what of the two forces that not long ago were vying for this quiet town of Zomnaygrad?

That is the question that is on everyone’s mind in the town. No one is sure what to make of the quiet. Some believe that each army lies waiting to pounce again on the town to claim what each believe is their sovereign territory. Some think both armies have been devastated from the attack and have pulled out to regroup. Others think the armies are now becoming part of the town, licking their wounds while they regroup to attack. Few think the fighting is done.

To that end, the UN council is sending over more advisors to help keep the peace that has now settled over the region. Reports say the UN would like to hold some preliminary meetings between the two sides so that a settlement may be reached without further bloodshed. Neither commanding officer could be reached for comment at this time.

So what of Zomnaygrad? There is little else to do but to go about business as usual. Rebuilding the town will take some effort, and the UN has pledged to send workers, as has the Red Cross to aid in the relief effort. Workers and advisors are scheduled to arrive in the region within the next few weeks, but due to the uncertainty of the situation surrounding the town, an exact date could not be given.

In time, perhaps life will get back to normal for the citizens of Zomnaygrad. For now, the town of Zomnaygrad will sit silent, waiting for the inevitable clash to once again take over their lives.
